About
I’m Thomas Flight, a writer, media critic, and filmmaker. My video essays cover the technical artistry of filmmaking and the language of the media that surrounds us through a media ecology lens.
I began working as an independent and commercial filmmaker at age 18, and learned the craft of filmmaking by trying my hand at as many parts of the process as I could, working as an Extra, PA, DIT, 1st Assistant Camera, Camera Operator, Boom Operator, Grip, Cinematographer, Sound Designer, Editor, Director, Screenwriter, and Producer on various commercial projects and independent shorts over the years.
Eventually I began applying my practical knowledge of filmmaking to my Video Essays, which I’ve been making full time since 2016. In the meantime, I’ve continued my work as a filmmaker, co-writing the screenplay Astral Beacon, directing the experimental film Labyrinth Ion, and directing and producing the documentary feature film, Out of a Flood.
I currently live in the mountains of Asheville, NC. My interests beyond media and art include meditation, psychology, rock climbing, backpacking, and cooking.
