A Conversation With Director Micheal Sarnoski

I’ll never forget walking out of Pig, Micheal Sarnoski’s directorial debut, and being completely blown away. Where I was expecting a campy, John Wick-styled revenge thriller, I got a thoughtful meditation on life, death, and grief.

I was similarly struck by Sarnoski’s recent third film The Death of Robin Hood, which stars Hugh Jackman as a Robin that is no longer the merry man. Instead he’s old and weary, reflecting back on a life of violence, ready to give up this mortal coil, but unable to. It’s again, a surprising film, starting as a hyper violent action piece in rugged North Irish landscape, before it transitions into, something else altogether. It’s worth your time.

Micheal’s a thoughtful director, and speaks very candidly in this interview about the challenges of working on both the indie and studio sides of the industry, and about struggling with how audiences respond to his sometimes-challenging approach to narratives. We also dig into his writing-process, how he got his start, and the influence the Irish landscape had on The Death Of Robin Hood.

I appreciate Micheal taking the time to sit down and chat with me, and hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.

The first hour of the conversation is available to everyone. You can watch the full, uncut conversation if you’re a paid subscriber to the newsletter.
